Should You Be Getting Your Skin Checked Annually?!
Find out why you shouldn’t be taking chances with skin this summer and who should be getting their skin checked, every year.
This is a message to those ladies out there who are seeing the years of sun, surf, sand or outdoor sports visibly show on their skin. 😩
Are you overdue for a skin check or not sure if you need one? With skin cancers accounting for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers in Australia every year, it’s time we all start taking skin checks seriously. Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world. Fact. Actually, it’s two to three times the rates in Canada, the US and the UK.
While the importance of early detection and regular self examination is generally accepted, what is less agreed upon is where, when and who should be getting an annual skin checks, in the first place.
Current guidelines don’t recommend yearly skin checks for everyone BUT this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have one! With rising skin cancer incidence, evidence is mounting for a more systematic screening program but in the meantime, it’s generally up to you and your doctor to bring up the topic of a skin check.
You can trust your face with us. Not all local doctors have furthered their surgical skin training to remove skin cancers with good cosmetic result, which is why Skin Devoted clinics like ours are a popular alternative. Seeing Skin Doctors who are GP’s, laser and cosmetic specialist means your skin is spoilt with surgical and non surgical options for treatment.
Why should I be getting a skin check? If you’ve never had one before, a Skin Check is your perfect opportunity to find out your individual skin cancer risk and then we can determine regularity of future checks. We can identify Sun Damaged Skin and perform “field treatments” to reverse skin damage and help prevent skin cancers emerging! Our Doctors offer Medicare rebatable resurfacing laser treatments, chemical peels or Photodynamic Therapies.
According to the Australian Cancer Council, two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70.
So if you haven’t had a skin check lately, it’s probably time you got one. Do you know how often you should be getting your skin checked? Firstly everyone should regularly scan themselves for changes in moles. If a mole is bigger, darker, itchy or bleeding then 📞1300 003223 for an urgent check.
You should get a yearly check if you have Sun Damaged Skin or 👇 Risk Factors:
45 years +
Family history melanoma
Lots of moles
Past history melanoma
Past history of a skin cancer
More than 20 solar keratoses.
Can you pick a potentially dangerous melanoma?
This is hard, even for a well trained eye! Dermatoscopy gives a better idea, compared to the naked eye and even harder for those with tattoos.
Don’t take chances with your skin.
Whether you fit the sun damaged skin profile, got a few too many sunburns this summer or just find it hard to check the moles on your back - you should get your Skin Checked this year.
