Are you hpv positive?

HERE’S WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW AND HOW YOU CAN FIND OUT (AT NO COST) TODAY!

If you’ve not been paying too much attention to news about The HPV Virus over the last few years, then let me bring you up to speed. Here's what you need to know in 2018 about cervical screening and how to protect yourself against cervical cancer.

👋 Hi, I’m Dr Suzie. I’m one of the Taylor Clinic General Practitioner's. I work in my Woollahra Rooms as well as Taylor Clinic, Bella Vista with Dr Avril and Dr Su-Yin. We do skin checks integrated with cosmetics as well as women's health checks.

Firstly, given that we NOW KNOW 99% OF CERVICAL CANCER IS CAUSED BY THE HPV VIRUS, it’s logical that the HPV virus has become focal to our New National Cervical Screening Program.

Did you know pap smear guidelines have changed? The New National Cervical Screening Program launched quietly in December 2017 replacing Pap smears Medicare funded testing for the HPV virus.

This is a fairly significant change. Worthy of a few seconds of your time to get the facts ...and share with your girlfriends! If you missed the news, Pap smears are now every 5 years instead of 2 years and have shifted from checking whether your Pap Smear cells are Normal or Abnormal to whether you’re HPV Positive or Negative.

Do you know if you’re HPV positive?

For those who are HPV positive, given you’re at higher risk of cervical changes, you can expect more tests and more regular checks, until Doctors are happy you have cleared the virus. For those who are HPV negative then you keep testing every 5 years.

IF YOU WANT TO FIND OUT IF YOU’RE HPV POSITIVE AND WOULD LIKE TO GET YOUR NEW CERVICAL SCREENING TEST DONE THEN OUR TAYLOR DOCTORS AT BELLA VISTA ARE MAKING THIS THE YEAR OF THE SMEAR.

I repeat, If you’re a woman aged 25-74 and sexually active, Cervical Screening Test is due every 5 years, unless you have the HPV virus detected. Also, Cervical Screening Tests now start at 25 (not 18) or 2 years after your last Pap test and the new test only screens for the HPV virus rather than screening your cells the way we used to do it before. The shift is expected to protect you 30% more, yet so far the reception has been luke warm to the change - old habits die hard...even for Pap Tests!?

Women feeling uncomfortable with having to wait an additional 3 years before their next screen should know that if a new symptom down-below arises, I can reassure you, you can get tested earlier!! So don’t worry.

To help increase local women’s awareness of the new changes to Cervical Screening our Doctors will offering bulk billed women’s pap checks for 2018. So if you’re Due, then help us make this the Year of the Smear ( and we can start cycling together, every 5 years!)
